ANARCHAS, in ichthyology, a genus of fishes of the order of apodes. The head of the anarchas is a little obtuse; the teeth are thick set and roundish. The six fore ones, both above and below, are conical and diverging; the inferior and palate molares are round; the branchiostegal membrane has six rays; the body is somewhat cylindrical; the tail-fin is distinct. There is one species of this genus; viz. the anarchas lupus, or sea-wolf. It grows generally to four or five feet in length. The lapis bufonites or lycodontes is the teeth of the anarchas petrified. It is a native of the northern coast of England.
