ASTER, in botany, a genus of the syngenesia polygamia superflua class. The receptacle is naked; the pappus is simple; the rays of the corolla are ten; and the calix is imbricated. The species are thirty-six, only one of which, viz. the tripodium, or sea-starwort, is a native of Britain.
