AVIGNON

AVIGNON, a large city of Provence in France, situated on the east side of the river Rhone, about 20 miles south of Orange, in $4^\{\backslash circ\}\; 40\text{'}$ E. long. and $43^\{\backslash circ\}\; 50\text{'}$ N. lat. It is an archbishop's see, and, with the whole district of Venaissine, subject to the pope.
