BALLOTA, in botany, a genus of the didynamia gymnospermia class. The calix has four teeth; the superior lip of the corolla is concave and crenated. There are four species, viz. the nigra, or stinking horehound, a native of Britain; the alba and lanata, both natives of Europe; and the suaveolens, a native of America.
