BROMELIA, or pine apple, in botany, a genus of the hexandria monogynia class. The calix is divided into three segments; it has three petals, and there is a fealy nectarium at the base of each petal; the berry has three cells. There are five species of bromelia, viz. the ananas or common pine-apple, which is a native of Surinam and New Spain; the pinguin, a native of Jamaica and Barbadoes; the karatos, lingulata, and nudicaulis, all natives of the southern parts of America.
