ADONIS, in botany, a genus of the polyandria polygynia class. The English names are, adonis-flower, pheasant's eye, red maithes, or red morocco. The calix of this genus is pentaphyllous, the petals are five, and the seeds are naked. There are five species of the adonis, viz. the æstivalis, autumnalis, vernalis, appennina, and capensis; none of which are natives of Britain, excepting the autumnalis.
