COURLAND, a duchy situated between 21° and 26° of E. long. and between 56° 30', and 57° 30' N. lat. It is bounded by the river Dwina, which divides it from Livonia, on the north; by Lithuania, on the east; by Samogitia, on the south; and by the Baltic sea on the west; being 130 miles long, and 30 broad.
