DAPHNE, in botany, a genus of the oestradia monogynia class. It has no calix; the corolla consists of four segments; and the berry contains but one seed. There are 11 species, two of which are natives of Britain, viz. the laureola, or spurge laurel; and the mezureum, or spurge olive. The laureola is a strong cathartic.
