DENTIFRICE, in medicine, a remedy for rubbing the teeth, and purging them from sordes; and for cleansing and absterging the gums, when replete with humours. There are dentifrices of various kinds and forms; some in form of a powder composed of corals, pumice-stone, salt, alum, egg-shells, crabs-claws, hartshorn, &c. others in form of an electuary, consisting of the same powders mixt up with honey; others are in form of a liquor drawn by distillations from drying herbs, and astringent medicines, &c.
