ELVAS

ELVAS, a city and bishop's see of Alentejo, in Portugal, situated near the frontiers of Spanish Estremadura: W. long. $7^\{\backslash circ\}\; 35\text{'}$, and N. lat. $38^\{\backslash circ\}\; 45\text{'}$.

It is one of the strongest fortresses in Portugal.
