GALLOWAY, a county of Scotland, which gives the title of earl to a branch of the noble family of Stuart.
It is divided into two districts; the western, called Upper Galloway, being the same with Wigtonshire; and the eastern, or stewartry of Kirkudbright, called Lower Galloway.
