HOLSTEIN, a duchy of Germany, in the circle of lower Saxony, one hundred miles long, and fifty broad. It is bounded by Sleswic or south Jutland on the north, by the Baltic sea and the duchy of Sax-Lawenburg on the east, by the river Elbe on the south, and by the German sea on the west.
