JUNIPERUS, in botany, a genus of the dioecia monadelphia class. The male has no corolla, but has three stamens; the calix of the female consists of three parts; it has three petals, and three styli; and the berry contains three seeds. There are nine species, only one of which, viz. the communis or common juniper, is a native of Britain. The berries are used as carminatives and stomachics.
