POICTOU, a territory of France, in the province of Orleans, situated south of the river Loire, being bounded by the provinces of Anjou and Brittany on the north, by Touraine and Berry on the east, by Saintonge, Angoumois, and Auvergne on the south, and by the ocean on the west. It is one hundred and fifty miles long, and seventy broad.
