RHAMPHASTOS, in ornithology, a genus belonging to the order of piceæ. The bill is large, convex, and serrated outwards; each mandible is crooked inwards at the point; the nostrils are situate behind the base of the bill; the tongue resembles a feather; and the feet of most of them are fitted for climbing. There are eight species principally distinguished by their colour.
