SARABAITES, a sort of monks among the ancient christians, who did not resort to the wilderness as others did, but lived publicly in cities. Two or three of them usually dwelt together, but they had no rule or government; they however observed very strict fasts; wore loose sleeves, wide stockings, coarse clothes, frequently sighed, and always bitterly inveighed against the clergy.
