SARCOCOLLA, in pharmacy, a gum-resin, which approaches greatly to the nature of the simple gums.

It is brought to us from Persia and Arabia, in small granules moderately heavy, and of a whitish, brownish, or reddish colour, very friable, of a faintish disagreeable smell, and of an acrid and mucous taste.

Hoffman absolutely condemns the internal use of it. However, it is recommended in ophthalmias, and defluviation of a sharp matter upon the eyes; and is generally ordered to be dissolved in milk for this purpose.
