SPERGULA, in botany, a genus of the decandria pentagynia class. The calix consists of five leaves, and the corolla of five entire petals; the capsule is oval, with one cell and five valves. There are five species, three of them natives of Britain, viz. the avenalis, or corn-spurrey; the pentandria, or small spurrey; and the nodosa, or knotted spurrey.
