SPHAGNUM, in botany, a genus of the cryptogamia muscorum class. The anthers are operculated, and there is no calyptra. The species are three, all natives of Britain, viz. the pallidum, or grey bog-moss; the alpinum, or mountain bog-moss; and the arborescens, or creeping bog-moss.
