SYRIA, a part of Asiatic Turkey, bounded by Natolia and Turcomania, on the north; by Diarbec or Mesopotamia on the east; by Arabia and Palestine on the south; and by the Levant-sea on the west. The Turks divide Syria into three beglerbeglies, or vice-royalties, viz. those of Aleppo, Tripoli, and Damascus, or Scham, the seats of the respective vice-roys.
