ALTON

ALTON, or AVELTON, a village in Staffordshire, five miles north of Utoxeter. There are the ruins of a castle here, which some would have to be built before the Norman conquest; but Dr Plot is pretty certain that it was erected by Theobald de Verdun, in the beginning.
