ALVARISTS, in ecclesiastical history, a branch of the Thomists, so called from Alvares their leader, who asserted the doctrine of sufficient grace, instead of the efficacious grace of the ancient Thomists. The Alvarists come near to the Jesuits, the ancient Thomists to the Janfenists.
