AMARYNTHUS, (anc. geogr.) a hamlet of Eretria, in the island of Eubœa, about seven stadia distant from its walls, (Strabo.) Here Diana was worshipped by an annual solemnity, at which those of Carystus assisted; hence the title of the goddess was Amarynthis, and Amarysia, (Livy, Pausanias).
