BAUSK, or BAUTKO, a small but important town
in the duchy of Courland, on the frontiers of Poland, with a strong castle built on a rock. It was taken by the Swedes in 1625, and by the Russians in 1705, after a bloody battle between them and the Swedes. It is seated on the river Mufa, in E. Long. 24. 44. N. Lat. 56. 30.
