AUVERGNE, a province of France, about 100 miles in length, and 75 in breadth. It is bounded on the north, by the Bourbonnois; on the east, by Torcz and Velay; on the west, by Limosin, Quercy, and La Marche; and on the south, by Rovergne and the Cévennes. It is divided into upper and lower; the latter, otherwise called Limagne, is one of the finest countries in the world. The mountains of Higher Auvergne render it less fruitful; but they afford good pasture, which feeds great numbers of cattle, which are the riches of that country. Auvergne supplies Lyons and Paris with fat cattle, makes a large quantity of cheese, and has manufactures of several kinds. The capital of the whole province is Clermont.
