CAIRNS, the vulgar name of those heaps of stones which are to be seen in many places of Britain, Scotland especially: they were undoubtedly raised in honour of the dead, as appears from the bones and ashes deposited in urns which have been frequently found in them. See ARRAN, n° 12.; and BARROWS.
