CORFU, a city of the island of that name, belonging to the Venetians. It is a large place; and is well fortified with walls to the south, where there are two fortresses, one to the east, and another to the west. There are no fortifications on the side of the haven, nor are they necessary. Here the Venetian general of the Levant resides, under whom are the provisors of Zante, Cephalonia, &c. The inhabitants of this city are said to be very revengful, never forgiving an injury; and hence quarrels among them are hereditary. There is always a garrison here of 4000 men. E. Long. 19. 48. N.
