CATANEA, a city of Sicily, seated on a gulph of the same name, near the foot of Mount Etna or Gibel. It suffered greatly by earthquakes in 1669 and 1693. This last overturned the city in a moment. Eighteen thousand of the inhabitants perished in the ruins, and yet the fertility of the soil has caused it to be repopled. E. Long. 15. 19. N. Lat. 37. 30.
