DIAMOND, in natural history, a genus of precious stones, of a fine pellucid substance, of great hardness, seldom fouled by any admixture of earthy or other coarse matter, susceptible of elegant tinges from metallic particles, giving fire with steel, not fermenting with acid menstrua, and of one simple and permanent appearance in all lights.
