JAMES I. king of Scotland in 1423, the first of the house of Stuart, was taken prisoner by the English in 1406, who were at war with Robert III. his father; and remained so till 1424, when he was set at liberty by John duke of Bedford regent of England during the minority of Henry VI. In 1437, this unfortunate prince was assassinated in his bed by the relations of those whom he had punished for maladministration during his imprisonment.
