HARPIES, among the ancient poets, fabulous impure monsters, said to be the daughters of Neptune and Terra. Virgil mentions three of them, Aello, Ocypte, and Celæno; they are described to be fowls, with the face of a virgin, bears ears, their bodies like vultures, and hands like their crooked talons.
