HATFIELD, a town in Hertfordshire in England. The kings of England had formerly a royal palace here, where Edward VI. was educated. King James I. exchanged the manor with Sir Robert Cecil, afterwards earl of Salisbury, for Theobalds, in the parish of Cheshunt in this country; and the lordship still remains in that noble family, who have a very fine seat here. The rectory, which is in that earl's gift, is reckoned worth 800 pounds a-year. W. Long. 0. 12. N. Lat. 51. 42.
