MAGNUS (John), archbishop of Upsal, was born at Lincopping in 1488. Being made apostolical nun-cio, he used his utmost endeavours to prevent Gustavus Vasa from becoming king of Sweden, and the introduction of Lutheranism into his dominions; and spared no means to attain these ends. He died at Rome in 1545. He wrote a history of Sweden, and a history of the archbishops and bishops of Upsal. He was succeeded by his brother OLAVUS Magnus.
