Norroy KING at Arms, is to do the same on the north side of the river Trent.
These two last are also called provincial heralds, in regard they divide the kingdom between them into provinces. By charter, they have power to visit noblemen's families, to set down their pedigrees, distinguish their arms, appoint persons their arms, and, with garter, to direct the other heralds.
Anciently, the kings at arms were created, and solemnly crowned, by the kings of England themselves; but of later days, the earl marshal has a special commission, at every creation, to personate the king.
