MEDEA, in fabulous history, daughter of Aetas king of Colchis, who possessed the golden fleece, A. M. 2741. She fell in love with Jason, helped him to the fleece, and then went away with him. She is said to have been a great sorceress, and by her art restored the age of Aeson her father-in-law. Jason afterwards forsaking her, in revenge she married Egeus; but was banished Athens, of which he was king.
