MELIBOEA, (anc. geog.), an island of Syria, at the mouth of the Orontes; which, before it falls into the sea, forms a spreading lake round it. This island was famous for its purple dye. Thought to be a colony of Thessalians; and hence Lucretius's epithet Thessalicens.
