MUNSTER, in Latin Monomia, and in Irish Meun, the most southerly province of Ireland; bounded on the south by the Vergivian sea, on the west by the Atlantic ocean, on the north by the river Shannon which parts it from Connaught, and on the east by the Irish sea. Its length is about 130 miles; but its breadth is very unequal, being from 68 miles to 120. The air is healthful and temperate; and the soil, where properly cultivated, is fruitful both in corn and grass; but the mountains are bleak and barren. The northern parts, being the most level and fertile, are the best improved and inclosed. Vast numbers of cattle are fed in the province; which is also well supplied with fish, especially cod and herrings.
