OTRANTO, a city of Italy, in the kingdom of Naples, and capital of the province of the same name, with a commodious harbour, an archbishop's see, and a strong citadel where the archbishop resides. It was taken by the Turks in 1480, who did a great deal of mischief: and it has frequently suffered much from the Algerines. It is a large handsome place, seated on the gulph of Venice, in E. Long. 18. 35. N. Lat. 40. 21.
