PATARA, (Livy, Mela); the capital of Lycia, to the east of the mouth of the river Xanthus; famous for a temple and oracle of Apollo, thence called Patareus, three syllables only; but Patareus, (Horace). For the six winter months, Apollo gave answers at Patara; and for the six summer at Delos, (Virgil, Servius); these are the Lycian Sortes of Virgil. The town was situated in a peninsula, called Lyciorum Chersonesus, (Stephanus).
