PATRICK (St), the apostle of Ireland, and second bishop of that country in the 5th century. At 16 years of age he was made a slave, and continued so for six years. Then he became a disciple of St Martin of Tours, who ordained him priest, and sent him into Ireland, where he laboured successfully for 60 years in converting the inhabitants.
