PEINE FORT ET DURE, (Lat. pena fortis et dura), signifies a special punishment inflicted on those who, being arraigned of felony, refuse to put themselves on the ordinarily trial, but stubbornly stand mute; it is vulgarly called pressing to death. See ARRAIGNMENT.
