Lat. 47°.—Another of the Salassii, near the two gates or defiles of the Alps, the Grajæ and Penninæ, (Pliny); a Roman colony, settled by Augustus after the defeat of the Salassii by Terentius Varro, on the spot where he encamped, (Strabo, Dio Cassius, Ptolemy), situated on the river Duria Major. The town is now called Assta
