TARQUIN the Proud, a tyrant and usurper, had rendered himself odious to the Romans by his pride and cruelty, when his son, Sextus Tarquinius, having ravished Lucretia, occasioned that well-known revolution which put an end to the monarchy, and established the republic of Rome.
