VEGA (Lopez de), a celebrated Spanish poet, also called Lope Felix de Vega Carpio, was born at Madrid in 1562; and became secretary to the bishop of Avila,

and afterwards to the count of Lemos, the duke of Vegetation, Alva, &c. At length having embraced the ecclesiastical state, he received priests orders, and became knight of Malta. He died in 1635. He wrote in Spanish a great number of theatrical pieces and poems that are admired.
