SESOSTRIS, king of Egypt or Rameses. Of the eight kings of the 16th dynasty there were six of the name of Sesostris or Rameses; and it was upon the death of Rameses Miriam, the great persecutor of the Jews in Egypt, that they were delivered from their first captivity: but it is supposed that the Egyptian priests have ascribed the various, real or fictitious, exploits of several of these princes to one man, under the name of Sesostris Rameses Miriam. Sir Isaac Newton supposes the great Sesostris to have been the same with Shishak, who plundered Jerusalem after the death of Solomon. See EGYPT, no 3—5.
