OPORTO, or PORTO; a rich, handsome, and considerable town of Portugal, in the province of Entre Douro and Minho, with a bishop's see. It is a place of great importance, and by nature almost impregnable. It is noted for its strong wines; and a large quantity is from thence exported into Britain, whence all red wines that come from Spain or Portugal are called port-wines.
