STIPULA, in botany, one of the fulera or props of plants, defined by Linnæus to be a scale, or small leaf, stationed on each side the base of the foot-stalks of the flower and leaves, at their first appearance, for the purpose of support. Elmgren restricts it to the foot-stalks of the leaves only.
