ASILUS, or HORNET-FLY, a genus of insects belonging to the order of insecta diptera. It has two wings; and a horny, straight, two-valved beak. There are 17 species of this insect. Many of them wound in a very painful manner, and are particularly troublesome to cattle in low meadows; others of them are quite harmless. See Plate LIV.
