ASTRINGENTS, in the materia medica, substances distinguished by a rough austere taste, and changing solutions of iron, especially those made in the vitriolic acid, into a dark purple or black colour; such are galls, tormentil root, bistort root, balaustines, terra japonica, acacia, &c.
