ARCHIACOLYTHUS (from αρχος, chief, and ακολυθός, minister), an ancient dignity in cathedral churches: the ministers whereof were divided into four orders or degrees, viz. priests, deacons, subdeacons, and acolythi; each of which had their chiefs. The chief of the acolythi was called archiacolythus.
